Renting in Widcombe
Compare Widcombe Parade and uphill addresses, check Bath Spa station access and campus journeys, and record the practical details at a viewing.
Widcombe is south-east of Bath city centre. For a rental search, distinguish an address around Widcombe Parade and Claverton Street from one further up Widcombe Hill or Prior Park Road. The route you would repeat with shopping or after a late train is more useful than a broad claim of being close to the station.
This guide focuses on those reference points and their approaches to Bath Spa station. It does not treat every property advertised as Widcombe as equally accessible.
Compare the station-side and uphill walks
The National Trust's route from Bath Spa documents the connection through the station underpass, across Halfpenny Bridge and on towards Widcombe Parade. Its onward walk up Prior Park Road includes hills. That makes a useful distinction when comparing addresses, but the visitor route is not an accessibility assessment of your home-to-station journey.
At the viewing, walk the actual approach you would use. Check road crossings, steps, surface, lighting and where an alternative route would be needed. Test the uphill return as well as the downhill outward trip. A route that works on foot may not work with a wheelchair, buggy or heavy luggage.
Use the Parade as an errand reference point
The Widcombe Association's local-business page is a starting point for the Parade. Check the individual businesses relevant to you rather than assuming every shopping need is available locally.
For each home, write down where you would buy everyday food, collect a prescription, receive parcels and make any regular appointment. Include the return gradient. If a delivery driver must use a different entrance from the one shown at a viewing, ask how that access works.
Check all four travel destinations separately
| Origin to compare | Destination | Decision to resolve |
|---|---|---|
| Widcombe Parade and the actual uphill address | Bath Spa station, Dorchester Street | Walking route, crossings and time from the correct entrance to your platform |
| Rossiter Road stop | University of Bath, Arrivals Square | Current boarding point and the final campus walk |
| Lyncombe Hill stop | Bath Spa University, Newton Park Library | Correct direction, departure time and return stop |
| Your door | Bath Spa University, Locksbrook | Complete walking, cycling or bus journey to the campus entrance |
National Rail's station information provides platform-access details. Use Bath Spa's directions to select the correct campus and Travelwest to compare door-to-door options.
Morning and evening timetable checks
For Tuesday 3 November 2026, the U3 Monday–Friday revision timetable during Manvers Street works lists these selected journeys:
| Direction | Named stops | Scheduled times |
|---|---|---|
| Towards the University of Bath | Rossiter Road → Arrivals Square | 08:13 → 08:36 |
| Late return towards Widcombe | Arrivals Square → Lyncombe Hill | 22:10 → 22:22 |
These are two stop-to-stop examples, not a promise of 23-minute travel from every home or a complete evening timetable. The outward and return stops differ. Add the walk from the property, waiting and the walk across campus. The operator lists different timetable periods and a later normal version; check the current version before relying on the example.
Ask questions that matter on this particular street
Use the rental viewing checklist for building condition, then add these local checks:
- Which entrance is used by occupiers, delivery drivers and anyone collecting bins?
- Where would a bicycle be stored, and can it reach that space without being carried through another room?
- Does the bedroom face the road or another space you should observe at your usual sleeping time?
- Can you complete the uphill journey comfortably in the conditions you expect to travel in?
- If you need a car, what does the council's permit guidance say about the exact address?
Record observations without extrapolating from a single visit. Compare the result with central Bath if station access is your priority, or Oldfield Park if you are balancing a shared-house search with another rail route.
Desk research checked: 3 November 2026. No property has been inspected and no walking time or accessibility outcome has been verified for an individual address.
